Antifouling Studies of Unsymmetrical Oligo(ethylene glycol) Spiroalkanedithiol Self-Assembled Monolayers

The antifouling properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold generated from custom-designed bidentate unsymmetrical spiroalkanedithiols containing both oligo(ethylene glycol) and hydrocarbon tailgroups (EG3C7-C7 EG3C7-C18) were evaluated compared to SAMs derived analogous monodentate octadecanethiol (C18SH) the tri(ethylene glycol)-terminated alkanethiol EG3C7SH. Complementary techniques, including in situ surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR), ex electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements, ellipsometric thickness employed assess protein resistance using proteins having a wide range sizes, structures, properties: protamine, lysozyme, bovine serum albumin (BSA), fibrinogen. studies found that adsorbates EG3C7-C7 EG3C7-C18, which contain 1:1 mixture OEG tailgroups, exhibited diminished capacity resist adsorption EG3C7SH SAMs, possess only tailgroups. data highlight critical role hydration matrix for generating OEG-based coatings.
